Learn how River Herring are vital to the health and abundance of Maine’s rivers and what is being done today to restore these keystone fish to their historical habitat by attending the February gathering of the Merrymeeting Bay Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Nate Gray, Maine Department of Marine Resources scientist within the Sea Run Fisheries and Habitat group, will present “River Herring Ecology,” an overview of the keystone nature of River Herring — including alewives and blueback herring — throughout their range both historically and existing populations.  Nate has worked on the Kennebec River Basin since 1992 and is actively involved in River Herring restoration projects.  He witnessed the removal of Edwards Dam in Augusta in 1999 and has seen populations of River Herring rise from a remnant to over five million with the installation of multiple fish passages, dam removals, and the opening of thousands of acres of historical habitat in the Kennebec drainage.
